Installing the Word Plugin
The Pactly Word plugin runs inside Microsoft Word as a task pane. Once it is installed, a Pactly button appears in your Word ribbon and opens a panel where you can review a contract against a playbook, insert clauses, and ask the in-plugin AI assistant questions, all without leaving the document.
There are four ways to install it, depending on whether you are setting it up for yourself or rolling it out to a team. Most people only need the first.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Microsoft Word. Windows: Word 2016 or later, or Microsoft 365. Mac: Word 2019 or later, or Microsoft 365. Word for the web works with some limitations (see Supported platforms below).
- A Pactly account with Word plugin access. The plugin is gated by your Pactly role. If your role does not include Word plugin access, you will be able to install the plugin but the panel will tell you to upgrade. See If you do not have access.
Find it on the Microsoft marketplace
Section titled “Find it on the Microsoft marketplace”When you search the Office add-in store, search for Pactly and look for the entry published by Pactly.
Option 1: Install from AppSource (individual users)
Section titled “Option 1: Install from AppSource (individual users)”This is the simplest path and the one most people use.
- Open Microsoft Word.
- On the ribbon, click Home and then Add-ins (on some Word versions this is Insert then Get Add-ins).
- In the Office Add-ins dialog, click Store and search for Pactly.
- Find the entry published by Pactly and click Add.
- Accept the permissions when prompted.
After it installs, the Pactly button appears on your Home ribbon. The plugin stays installed across Word sessions, so you only do this once.
Option 2: Use an organization-deployed plugin
Section titled “Option 2: Use an organization-deployed plugin”Many organizations push the plugin to their users centrally, so you do not have to install it yourself. If your IT team has deployed it:
- Open Microsoft Word.
- Click Home and then Add-ins (or Insert then My Add-ins).
- Look under Admin Managed for the Pactly entry.
- Click it to open the plugin.
If you do not see it under Admin Managed, ask your IT team to add you to the deployment group. A newly deployed plugin can take up to 24 hours to appear.
Option 3: Deploy across your organization (IT administrators)
Section titled “Option 3: Deploy across your organization (IT administrators)”Deploy the plugin to selected users or groups from the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Sign in to admin.microsoft.com as an administrator.
- Go to Settings, then Integrated apps, then Add-ins.
- Click Deploy Add-in, then Next.
- Select Choose from the Store.
- Search for Pactly and select the entry published by Pactly.
- Choose which users or groups should have access.
- Click Deploy.
Users see the plugin in Word within 24 hours of deployment, under Admin Managed in My Add-ins.
If your organization cannot deploy from the Store, deploy the manifest file instead (Option 4).
Option 4: Sideload from a manifest file
Section titled “Option 4: Sideload from a manifest file”For organizations without Store access, or self-hosted Pactly deployments where the plugin must point at your own Pactly server, install the plugin from its manifest file using Upload custom apps in the admin center.
Open the plugin for the first time
Section titled “Open the plugin for the first time”Once the plugin is installed:
- Open any Word document.
- Click Pactly on the ribbon. The panel opens on the right side of Word.
- Sign in with your Pactly credentials, or use single sign-on (SSO) if your organization has it configured.
Signing in to the plugin uses the same account as the Pactly web app. For credentials, SSO, password resets, and verifying your access, see Signing in to Pactly (Getting Started).
If you do not have access
Section titled “If you do not have access”Word plugin access is controlled by your Pactly role. If you sign in and the panel says your role doesn’t have access to the Word Plugin, your account is not yet enabled for it.
Contact your Pactly account manager to upgrade your account. An administrator at your organization can also confirm whether Word plugin access is included in your role.
Supported platforms
Section titled “Supported platforms”| Platform | Minimum version | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Word for Windows | Word 2016 or Microsoft 365 | Full support |
| Word for Mac | Word 2019 or Microsoft 365 | Full support |
| Word for the web | Current | Supported, with some limitations |
The plugin requires Word API 1.1 as a minimum and uses newer capabilities (such as tracked-change comments) when your version of Word supports them, degrading gracefully when it does not. The plugin does run in Word for the web, but some tracked-change features behave inconsistently there, so use the desktop app when redlining a contract you will send back to a counterparty.
If the plugin does not appear
Section titled “If the plugin does not appear”If you installed the plugin but it does not show up in the ribbon, or the panel opens blank:
- Close Word completely and reopen it.
- Check My Add-ins to confirm it is installed.
- If your IT team deployed it, allow up to 24 hours for it to propagate.
For Office cache clearing, firewall and proxy settings, and other load failures, see Word Plugin Not Loading.
