Installing Pactly Assist

Pactly Assist is a Microsoft Word add-in that brings AI-powered contract review into your document workflow. Once installed, it appears in your Word ribbon and opens a panel where you can review contracts, browse clauses, and chat with AI—all without leaving Word.

  • Microsoft Word: Desktop app (Windows or Mac). The web version of Word is not currently supported.
  • Operating System: Windows 10/11 or macOS 10.14+
  • Pactly Account: You need an active Pactly account. Ask your administrator if you don’t have one.
  • Internet Connection: Required for AI features

Option 1: Install from AppSource (Individual Users)

The simplest way to install Pactly Assist:

  1. Open Microsoft Word
  2. Click InsertGet Add-ins (or HomeAdd-ins depending on your Word version)
  3. In the Office Add-ins dialog, search for Pactly
  4. Find Pactly Assist and click Add
  5. Accept the permissions when prompted

After installation, you’ll see Pactly Assist in your Home ribbon. The add-in persists across Word sessions—you only install once.

Option 2: IT-Deployed Installation (Managed by Your Organization)

Many organizations pre-deploy Pactly Assist to users. If your IT team has done this:

  1. Open Microsoft Word
  2. Click InsertMy Add-ins
  3. Look under Admin Managed for Pactly Assist
  4. Click to activate

If you don’t see it under Admin Managed, contact your IT team—they may need to add you to the deployment group.

Deploy Pactly Assist via Microsoft 365 Admin Center:

  1. Sign in to admin.microsoft.com
  2. Go to SettingsIntegrated AppsAdd-ins
  3. Click Deploy Add-inNext
  4. Select Add from the Office Store
  5. Search for Pactly and select Pactly Assist
  6. Choose which users or groups should have access
  7. Click Deploy

Users will see Pactly Assist in Word within 24 hours of deployment.

After installation, open Pactly Assist for the first time:

  1. Open any Word document
  2. Click Pactly Assist in the ribbon
  3. A panel opens on the right side of Word
  4. Click Sign In
  5. Enter your Pactly credentials, or use single sign-on (SSO) if your organization has configured it

Once signed in, you’ll see the home screen with three main options:

  • Review — Run a playbook review on the current document
  • Clauses — Browse and insert clauses from your organization’s library
  • Chat — Ask AI questions about the contract

Analyze contracts against your organization’s negotiation standards. The AI reads the document, checks each position in your playbook, and flags issues with guidance on what to do.

Use this when you receive a contract from a counterparty (third-party paper) and need to verify it meets your requirements.

Browse pre-approved clause language and insert it directly into your document. Search by topic or browse by tags. The AI can adapt clauses to match the contract’s terminology.

Use this when drafting or negotiating—insert your standard language without copying from old contracts.

Ask questions about the contract in natural language. The AI understands the document and can explain clauses, suggest edits, or help you understand unfamiliar terms.

Use this when you need quick answers: “What’s the termination notice period?” or “Explain this indemnification clause.”

Add-in Doesn’t Appear After Installation

  1. Close Word completely and reopen
  2. Check InsertMy Add-ins to verify it’s installed
  3. If using IT deployment, allow up to 24 hours for propagation
  4. Try clearing the Office cache:
    • Windows: Delete contents of %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Wef\
    • Mac: Delete ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef
  1. Verify your Pactly account works at app.pactly.ai
  2. Check with your administrator that Word add-in access is enabled for your account
  3. If using SSO, verify your organization’s SSO configuration with IT
  4. Try signing in to the web app first, then retry the add-in
  1. Check your internet connection
  2. Close the panel and reopen it (click Pactly Assist again)
  3. Verify your browser allows third-party cookies (required for embedded authentication)
  4. Restart Word
