Link a Document to an Existing Contract

You have a contract open in Word, but the Pactly Word Plugin shows the main menu instead of the contract record. It doesn’t recognize which contract this document belongs to. Link it to the right record so your edits, rounds, and playbook reviews are tracked against that contract.

The plugin auto-detects a contract by reading a hidden contract reference Word stores in the document’s custom properties. Documents generated or previously linked through Pactly carry that reference, so the plugin opens straight to the contract. A document received outside Pactly carries no reference, so detection has nothing to match.

Linking writes that reference into the open document, so the plugin recognizes it from then on.

Manual linking is available on Enterprise plans.

Step 1 of 5
1
Open the plugin on the document

With the document open in Word, open the Pactly Word Plugin panel. If the contract is not detected, the main menu appears instead of the contract record.

2
Open the associate dialog

Scroll to the bottom of the panel and select "Not seeing the results you expected?". The "Associate to existing contract" dialog opens.

3
Choose the contract type

Set "Contract type" to match the document: "On-Template contract" for your organization’s own paper, or "Playbook contract" for a counterparty contract you are reviewing.

4
Find the contract

Use the "Filter by name or reference..." field to narrow the list by contract name or reference number, then select the matching row from the Name / Reference table.

5
Link it

Click "Link document". Pactly writes the contract reference into the document and opens its record in the panel.

Step 1 of 5

The document is now linked. Any edits, rounds, or playbook reviews are tracked against this contract from here on.

The plugin auto-detects contracts it generated or that you linked before. Link manually when:

  • You received the document outside Pactly (for example, by email) and need to connect it to an existing record.
  • The document was copied or renamed and detection no longer matches.
  • You downloaded the document from Pactly and the plugin doesn’t recognize it on re-open.
