Link a Document to an Existing Contract

You have a contract document open in Word but the Pactly plugin doesn’t recognize which contract it belongs to. Instead of the contract record, you see the main menu. You need to link this document to the right contract record so your edits are tracked and version history stays intact.

  1. Open the document in Word and open the Pactly plugin panel. If the contract is not detected, the main menu appears.

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the panel and select Not seeing the results you expected?

  3. On the Associate to existing contract screen, choose whether the contract is based on your organization’s template or provided by a counterparty. If it’s from a counterparty, select Playbook contract.

  4. Choose how to locate the contract: by contract name or reference number.

  5. If you know the reference number, enter it to narrow down the results. Otherwise, search by name.

  6. Select the correct contract from the list and click Link document.

Your document is now linked to the contract record. Any edits, rounds, or playbook reviews will be tracked against this contract going forward.

The plugin automatically detects contracts when you open a document that was generated or previously linked through Pactly. Manual linking is needed when:

  • You received a document outside of Pactly (e.g., via email) and need to connect it to an existing record
  • The document was copied or renamed, breaking the automatic detection
  • You downloaded the document from Pactly and the plugin doesn’t recognize it on re-open
